13 Laps Around the Sun
Acrylic on canvas board
This piece is a painting of me in my living room. I am sitting and gazing out the window. In the window there is an ombré in the sky at my favorite time of day, sunset. Lastly, on the wall there is a painting from a past birthday, one of the first I made myself.

Josh-Nanakuli HS/Int I Slay Colored markers me colored pencils While I still have the time in high school, I enjoy drawing my favorite anime characters for the studio class and for my own pleasure. Once I leave Nanakuli high and intermediate school, I won’t have much time and energy to indulge in this type of work as it may be considered by others only a hobby that should be set side when adult life becomes the focus. As of now, I can put my energies in a world of anime that is fun, adventurous and safe. |
Haeden -Nanakuli HS/Int Things on My Mind Ink and pencil Different things that come into my mind while drawing myself. |
Camille -Nanakuli HS/Int Spirited Away Watercolor and colored markers While I still have time in high school, I have been making art and improving my skills. I enjoy ‘Spirited Away’ and it’s a well known classic. I really like studio Ghibli’s films and wanted to make a piece that showed my appreciation of this film me his art. When I leave Nanakuli High & Int., I will still have “Spirited Away” and this moment in my memories. |
Jonathan -Nanakuli HS/Int School One Punch Man Colored markers and colored pencils The artwork represents the power of god when their ability is used at full strength. It represents a hero taking down threats within a punch much like victim in the back. When doing this artwork, I felt the details and the depth within, especially when adding colors as it makes the detail push forward and show emotion. |

Last Ride Home
Oil paint on canvas
After my papa came out of the hospital earlier this year, my dad would take home for a ride whenever he went home to visit. In “Last Ride Home”, my papa quietly sleeps in the car as they head over the the hills of Waimea, Hawai’i on his last trip before passing away.

Kieren -Kamehameha Schools Kapalama `Ulu Digital Print `Ulu was one of the few original plants to arrive with the first settlers of the Hawaiian Islands. Just as hula allows dancers to connect with their ancestors, `ulu represents a time when people were spiritually aligned with the `aina and lived sustainably. |
Jahlani -Kamehameha Schools Kapalama `O Mo`oloa Relief print Mo`oloa is my favorite mountain range on Moloka`i. Some parts of artwork look like the skin or the eyes of a mo`o. Inspired by o`Kapala and kapa decoration, a 1” x 8” strip of linoleum was carved and printed repeatedly. Some of the printing was on the reverse side of the semi-transparent paper made from wauke fiber. |
Luke -University Laboratory School Present and Past Pastel and charcoal on paper This self-portrait still-life is a representation of my interests and hobbies from my past and present. It also shows how most of them have stayed with me up to now. I chose these objects to represent myself because most of my life has been finding enjoyment out of the things I love. |
Peter -University Laboratory School Ancestry Pastel and charcoal on paper This piece is a self-portrait still-life, created using white and black charcoal and pastel on black paper. I chose objects of cultural significance to Chinese customs: chopsticks, Chinese candies, a jade necklace, a jade bracelet, and a Hong Bao, which translates to ‘red envelope’. The Hong Bao is oftentimes given to children on the New Year, filled with money as a symbol of luck, life and happiness. |
Alejandro -Wai`anae High School Slow Slug Ceramics I did a slug because they take it slow and have plenty of time for anything. |
Mia -Moanalua High School Polyvinyl Pique Photography We often aim to attain ‘pique’ perfection when taking portraits; this typically includes bodily editing and photoshop, but we’re more than just porcelain people. The texture and authenticity of our bodies are what make us beautiful, and placing a plastic bag to cover them up is an injustice to our ethereality. |
Lauren -Moanalua High School Mandala Photogram Photography Using light sensitive paper, an enlarger, and various objects, I am able to control the amount of light passing through and create and mandala pattern, divided into four sections. Here, I used several different plants from my home garden long with paper cut-outs, all of which have different opacities that result in a range of of black, grey and white. |

Her World
Graphite
This is a portrait of my friend Emma in the forest. She is beautiful, and it was near impossible to capture even a fraction of her beauty in my art piece. Emma’s solemn expression, along side the trees, and countless leaves in the background represent how she lives in “her world”, free of people, worry and reality.

Running out of Time
Mixed-media
While brainstorming for this piece, I reflected on how I spend my time throughout my day. I love listening to music– especially vinyl records– so I tried capturing this passion that I have into the project. I used a wide range of materials, including fabric, clay, paint, paper, and a turntable.

Kekai -Punahou School $77 Mixed-media Originally I hated how my piece was turning out. I stabbed the middle of it with a knife, and used a blowtorch in hopes to destroy it. I found beauty in the destruction, so I decided to complete the piece by turning the stab into a door, and scratch out the burn marks for a rustic feel. The door and pathway is textured with razor cuts, and the handprints were done with my hands, not painted |
Aerin -Punahou School Stop Drinking All The Juice, Landon Recycled aluminum cans Oftentimes, it's the little things I love the most. I've always loved the way the Hawaiian Sun and Aloha Maid juice cans looked. If they manage to hold up, I would love to bring these pieces up with me when I go to college to hold onto a little piece of home. I guess Landon will be drinking ALL of the juice at home from now on... |
Sarah -Le Jardin Academy Introspection Colored pencil In the summer of 2021, I went on a college-tour trip. And as I was beginning to write my essays, I had to do a lot of reflection on my life and achievements. I took the reference for this piece on my flight home while brainstorming ideas for my collage essay. |

Magic of the Moon Tempra paint As the title says, the girl is a witch guarded by a spirit of lost animals, mainly the cat. To focus on the mysterious vibe, she has demonic features with stars me clouds symbolizing the peace and purity, regardless of the looks creating stereotypical scene. |
Ariana -Sacred Hearts Academy (Uragiri) meaning: betrayal Acrylic Woman (with mask) finds out that her husband has cheating on her (shown in the back). The mask represents her jealousy that is consuming her. The mask is a Hannah mask which in Japanese history is used as a way of presenting jealousy. The painting is paired with the ceramic mask. |
Ariana -Sacred Hearts Academy (Shitto) Meaning: Jealously Ceramic Mask Hannya Mask represents the female demon of jealousy. This piece goes with the painting. The rings on the horns represent the bond between the husband and wife. As you can see, the husband’s ring is broken because he was unfaithful. |
Joycelyn -Sacred Hearts Academy Das Veilchen~Blue Watercolor, acrylic An homage to my middle-school art. I was really into watercolors and Lolita fashion at the time. I am now a senior, and balance both music and art along with school work. The title of the piece is fro. Mozart’s work of the same name. |
